Internet training system for listening and pronunciation of Chinese stop consonants

چکیده
This paper describes a system for Chinese pronunciation and listening training on the Internet. The target Chinese stop consonants /b/, /p/, /d/, /t/ were chosen for this experiment. In the pronunciation component, a dynamic low-pass ltered power(DLP) was used as an acoustic feature to discriminate between aspirated sounds and unaspirated sounds. With the sounds uttered by Chinese native speakers, we obtained a discrimination accuracy of 98.37% and 96.71% for aspirated consonants and unaspirated consonants respectively. Then we applied the pronunciation system to the sounds uttered by Japanese speakers who are learning Chinese as a second language and obtained an accuracy of discrimination. At last, a score is fed back to trainee according to the accuracy of his pronunciation and at the same time, the system instructs the trainee to improve his/her pronunciation. In the listening component, in contrast to traditional methods, our system can not only let the trainee listen to the sound, but can also give him a feedback which will show whether or not his judgment about what he has heard is correct. The listening training system was constructed in Java language so that it can be used on any platform. We will introduce the background and basic principles of the system, and give some examples of its use in language education.

متن کاملChinese L1- Croatian L2 - Difficulties and Success
This pilot study presents the results of speech training exercises (phonetic correction) in 5 (4F and 1M) Chinese students of Croatian. The effects of training were assessed through listening evaluation tests and acoustic analysis of vowels. Twenty students of phonetics, native speakers of Croatian evaluated the pronunciation skills of Chinese students. The acoustic analysis of vowel formants i...
متن کاملPhonetic variation in consonants in infant-directed and adult-directed speech: the case of regressive place assimilation in word-final alveolar stops.
Pronunciation variation is under-studied in infant-directed speech, particularly for consonants. Regressive place assimilation involves a word-final alveolar stop taking the place of articulation of a following word-initial consonant. We investigated pronunciation variation in word-final alveolar stop consonants in storybooks read by forty-eight mothers in adult-directed or infant-directed styl...
متن کاملA prototype of an adaptive Chinese pronunciation training system
Many beginning-level Chinese learners, particularly those whose mother tongue is not a tone language find it challenging to learn Chinese pronunciations and tones. Yet pronunciation practice in formal language class settings is limited. Therefore, it has become necessary to develop computer-assisted and adaptive training systems to help learners practice Chinese pronunciation outside of class. ...
متن کاملTransient map method in stop consonant discrimination
Discrimination between the voiceless stop consonants !k,p,tl is a subproblern in phoneme-based speech recognition systems. Lack of energy during the pronunciation and the fast transient effects at the end of the phoneme make the recognition difficult. A method of so called Phonotopic Maps [2] was studied in order to develop simple and effective solutions for discrimination. In the following stu...
